Lodging in Alexander City Near Auburn Alabama
Alexander City has a population of about 15,000 and dates from 1872. The City Commercial Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. Much of the town burned in a fire in 1902. The economy was originally based on the textile industry; but, has diversified in recent times. The Russell Corporation of Alexander City was bought by Berkshire Hathaway/Fruit of the Loom in 2006 and most operations moved offshore. Management was moved to Bowling Green, KY. “Alex City” as it is known to locals is close to Lake Martin, the second largest lake in Alabama. It has 750 miles of wooded shoreline with 44,000 acres of crystal clear water. Lake Martin is on the Tallapoosa River and has boating, fishing, golfing and camping. There are marinas, restaurants and many luxury homes on the lake.
